On March 7th-15th our Lady Dons went on to compete in the State Championships. With accomplishing such a sensational season with many great wins they have created a bond that made them such a hardworking and motivated team. This year we had 7 seniors and most of them were starters for every single game and have skillful achievements throughout the season. These athletes played against Dexter, Newcomb, Santa Fe Indian, and their final game was against Navajo Prep. They won against the first three schools by several points. The final day of the tournament the Lady Dons played Navajo Prep. These intelligent athletes started off with vigorous ambition, working hard to attain successful wins.
The Lady Dons rallied in the second quarter, led by senior Alexis Pacheco, who scored six of her game-high 16 points in the time frame, while also grabbing a total of eight rebounds. Junior Shiann Montoya nailed a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to send both teams to the locker room in a 24-24 tie. The second half of the game featured eight lead changes as well as seven moments in which the game was tied. The Lady Dons had a five-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter thanks to seniors Jayla Cordova and Yesenia Esquibel, who each connected from long range to give West Las Vegas a 39-34 lead heading to the final quarter. That lead extended to seven points in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter when junior Tyra Horner found her way to the basket for a driving layup to make a 41-34 advantage. Those would be the last points the Lady Dons would score for nearly five full minutes. Unfortunately they didn't win the State Championship ending with the final score 52 to 43. We are very proud of their hard work and dedication this season. GO LADY DONS Go!!!
